Denkyembour holds education oversight committee meeting

The District Education Oversight Committee of the Denkyembour District Assembly has held its first meeting for 2022.

The committee is mandated by the Education Act, 2008 (Act 778) to ensure that the conditions of school buildings and any other infrastructural requirements are overseen and also oversee the performance of functions by staff at the various schools within the district.

District Chief Executive for the area, Mr. Seth Birikorang Ofosu who chairs the District Education Oversight Committee also welcomed all members to the meeting and led the house through the business of the day.

He expressed his gratitude to all members for actively participating in all discussions and urged them that plans are being put in place for members to engage in monitoring activities in selected educational institutions within the district.

The District Director for Education mentioned that the Common Core Program which was designed for basic 7 to basic 10 learners seeks to provide them with holistic learning experience to prepare them for their post-secondary education. He said about 258 persons had undergone training comprising all JHS teachers, SISOs and office staff of the district’s education directorate.


He also indicated that there had been about 50 intra-district reposting after an extensive certificate audit was conducted in the district because there was the need for rationalization of teachers in the district to ensure that each school had a fair share of staff to enable the school to operate adequately towards the achievement of the ultimate educational goal adding that the district had received 53 newly-trained teachers from public colleges of education who have duly pursued their national service and passed their licensure examinations.

The District Director for Education further gave brief presentations on interventional programs in education delivery in the district. He mentioned that there was the Translation to English Language program which sought to support over 5000 schools in Ghana with in-classroom support activities, pre-recorded and interactive radio reading lessons which would be aired in the classrooms and on target Regional Radio Stations. He said over 190 teachers, 41 head teachers and 5 SISOs had been trained to implement the project in the Denkyembour District.

He lastly presented the other interventional program called the JICA COMPASS project which seeks to improve learning outcomes through community participation for sustainability in schools. The project sought to strengthen the capacities of SISOs, head teachers and SMCs in management efficiencies to enable them to mobilize resources and manage efficiently to improve learning outcomes.
