Conditions under which slaughter houses operate in the country has been topical issues in most of the MMDAs especially at a time government is making efforts to improve health conditions of the citizens.

Because most slaughter houses are owned by private individuals, conditions under which they operate leaves much to be desired.
To ensure sanity in the operations of slaughter houses and ensure the public is serve with wholesome meat a number of MMDAs have taken the initiative to put up modern slaughter houses.

The Yilo Krobo Municipality happens to be one of the assembly making frantic efforts to put up an abattoir at Somanya.

The modern facility which is designed to contain slaughter house, oven, pen, changing room, veterinary clinic with sanitary facilities would soon commence as soon as the ministry of local government gives green light for the award of the contract.

Though the project is an initiative of the assembly, the amount involved is beyond the threshold of the assembly and has to be handled at a higher level, and this is what the assembly is waiting for to start construction.

Municipal Chief Executive, Andrew Sodah said construction of the new abattoir has become necessary since the old one serving all three assemblies including Yilo, Lower Manya, and Asuogyaman is too old and in a poor state to guarantee safty of meat processed there.
He is hopeful the Ministry would expedite work on the document for early award of the contract.
