The Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Mr. Thomas Bismark Boakye, has urged road users to be patient and obey traffic regulations.

He was speaking at a safety education campaign held for school children at Kodie in the Afigya-Kwabre District in response to what is seen as an unacceptably high knock-downs of pedestrians.

He said it is estimated that 60 per cent of road accident deaths in the urban areas involved pedestrians and that, as part of measures to tackle the disturbing situation, the NRSC has launched a campaign dubbed “Be alert; look out for other road users.

About 27 per cent of these fatalities occur in the night and at places where there are no street lights and often caused by driver inattentiveness and speeding.

Mr Boakye expressed concern about the improper design and construction of the roads, as well as poor enforcement of traffic laws and, saying that, these had not been helpful to efforts at bringing down the fatalities.

He underlined the determination of the Commission to step up its education campaign to make the roads safe for all.
