The intervention, funded through the Disability Fund, is aimed at empowering beneficiaries with the resources needed to establish or expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The distribution exercise was supervised by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah, together with officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.
As part of efforts to ensure that the support meets the needs of beneficiaries, the Assembly conducted field assessments before the distribution to identify suitable items based on the recipients’ business interests, skills and physical capabilities.
The items distributed included deep freezers, industrial sewing machines, salon hairdryers, mechanical fufu-pounding machines and other business startup materials.
Some beneficiaries also received cash grants to serve as seed capital for establishing or expanding small-scale retail businesses within their communities.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to promoting sustainable empowerment for PWDs rather than providing only temporary assistance.
She explained that equipping beneficiaries with productive tools and financial resources would create opportunities for them to generate income, strengthen their financial independence and contribute to the local economy.
The MCE urged the beneficiaries to use the items for their intended business purposes and cautioned against selling the equipment. She added that the Assembly would conduct periodic monitoring visits to assess the use of the items and the progress of the businesses.
For their part, leaders of the local PWD association expressed appreciation to the MCE and the Assembly’s management for the support, describing the intervention as an important step towards reducing the financial challenges faced by members.
The initiative forms part of efforts to promote inclusion, expand economic opportunities and enable Persons with Disabilities to participate more actively in the municipality’s economic development.
