The items collected from almost all parts of the region includes; cosmetics, assorted drinks, medicines, herbal medicine and canned foods.

In an interview with the Eastern Regional Director of FDA, Samuel Kwakye, said the idea of destroying those items is to protect the citizenry and the country at large from common diseases.

He added that the FDA Ghana aims to implement the appropriate regulatory measures to achieve the highest standards of safety, efficacy and quality for all food, drugs, cosmetics, household medical substances and medical devices.

“(Hereinafter referred to as products) locally manufactured imported, exported distributed sold or used to ensure the protection of the consumer as envisaged by the laws regulating food and drugs in force in Ghana” he emphasized.

To him, the reason for destroying the items is to ensure safe disposal of items.

“If the FDA leaves the items unsupervised till it burns to ashes some recalcitrant can go back and pick some of the products and send it back to the market” Mr. Kwakye noted.

He said unwholesome products are not fit for human consumption and we completely need to get rid of them.

Mr. Kwakye mentioned that the FDA is optimistic to protect the public from producing unwholesome and expiring products to the market.

He further advised public to continue to be each other’s keepers by doing what will not bring untoward effects to others, saying something which have been declared unwholesome and expired can be injurious to people’s health.
