The Presiding Member for the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Hon. Daniel Darko Doodo is pleading on government to come to the aid of Assembly Members by cushioning them with incentives to augment that of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Assembly Members within the country are not paid salaries but they receive motivational packages in a form of sitting allowances usually incurred by the MMDAs.

Although the PM agreed in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com’s reporter that Asasembly Members could not be paid now, he implored on government that “the motivation aspect should be taken care off to be able to attract intellectuals to the assembly” for them to also contribute their quota for the development of the country.

He suggested that government could allocate a portion of the consolidated fund to that effect.

“Our allowances from our own Internally Generated Funds (which are usually not enough), so I think the government should come in to support the Assemblies by giving a hands allowances out of the consolidated fund. That will help to bring in more intellectuals,” he said.

Hon. Doodo indicated that Assembly members form the law making body of the MMDA and since they were not paid, a better motivational package be allocated them to encourage them to put up their best.

On the District Assembly election, Hon. Doodo said the Electoral Commission is putting measures in place for the success of the election but pleaded for more intellectuals to take part in the election.
