Even before dust settles on public outcry over the demolition exercise at Adjei Kojo in the Tema Metropolis by the Tema Development Corporation, another is in the offing.
The Ga West Municipal Assembly is to carry out a planned demolition of unauthorized houses and other structures on the 233 acre plot at Adjen Kotoku starting Monday February 3, 2014.
The land is being developed for relocation of traders at old Fadama market in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to make way for work to commence on the Accra sewage projects. The projects which include construction of major drains is aimed at finding lasting solution to the perennial flooding in the capital and to ensure clean and healthy environment in the capital.
Already, some major infrastructure at the place including lockable stores, market stalls, sanitary facilities and lorry stations, police and fire service stations among others have all been completed.
Chief Executive of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Sam Atukwei Quaye said the demolition exercise is important to make way for expansion and construction of more sheds to cater for all the traders. He indicated that government has already paid compensation to owners of the houses on the plot and what is left is the land, as such no one can lay claims to any property on the said land.
Meanwhile, some traders have kicked against the February ending deadline for the relocation. They claim the structures are woefully inadequate to accommodate them and the possibility of them losing their customers and money when the deadline is adhered to.
