Access to quality health delivery is second to none when it comes to ensuring the growth of any society.
This is so because the human resource that has to drive development has to be healthy enough to make real what is to be done.
The Bongo District like any other society looks forward to seeing improvement in all its sectors of the economy. However, the health sector leaves much to be desired as a lot of things are lacking.
The District hospital which currently serves as the referral hospital for all other health facilities in the district lacks a lot of important centres and logistics.
With a population of over 85, 000, according to the 2010 population census, the existing health infrastructure in the district is woefully inadequate, District Chief Executive for the area, Alexis Ayamdor has stated.
The DCE said while the district hospital is not up to standard because there are no specialized units, the district cannot boast of any polyclinic. Woes still, there is no ambulance service in the district to facilitate transportation of referral cases from the other 10 health centres and smaller health facilities like the CHPS compounds to the district hospital for attention.
Another issue of concern is inadequate health personnel. According to Mr. Ayamdor until recently, the district had only three doctors, a Ghanaian and two Cuban doctors managing the hospital. However, with the departure of the two Cuban doctors, the hospital has only one doctor. “Not only do we lack doctors but nurses and midwives too; and these are professionals who play critical roles in saving lives”, he stated.
Hopeful of getting ambulance this year to establish ambulance service at the district capital, the DCE said a lot of efforts are been made to get a station in readiness for the arrival of the ambulance to facilitate transportation of referral cases.
Mr. said to show their readiness for the construction of a new modern hospital, the district assembly with the help of traditional authorities in the district has secured over 100 acre lands for any such intervention.
