Mr Alexis Ayamdor, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Bongo District has stated that Government was committed and determined to deepening the quality of education and increase access to secondary education particularly for deprived communities.
The DCE gave the assurance when he visited the Zorko Senior School at Zorku, in the Bongo District to acquaint himself with the level of development there and to see how the assembly could help address some the challenges facing the school.
Mr Alexis said it was in the light of Government’s commitment to education that the President, John Dramani Mahama, through the Better Ghana Agenda, was initiating 50 community Senior High Schools each year for the next four years.
The President, he stressed, was very committed to the execution of the agenda and efforts are underway to realize the objective.
He urged stakeholders to exercise restraints whilst government continues to mobilize resources to prosecute the agenda and assured the management of the school that the Assembly’s Medium Term Development Programme would cater for some of the problems confronting the school.
The DCE assured the school that the Assembly would ensure that the contractor working on the 18 Unit Classroom block, including dormitories for the students was completed on time.
Mr Ayamdor lauded the Chiefs and the people of the area for offering land for the School with minimal compensation and assured the School authority that the Assembly would assist it to document the acquired land.
The DCE said he was surprised that, despite all the challenges facing the School, which started some few years ago, it had been able to enroll 574 students, and that, its first batch of students who sat for the West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination last year recorded 100 per cent pass.
Among some of the challenges facing the school, which is currently a day school, include teachers commuting long distances of about 20 to 30 kilometres daily to school, affecting teaching and learning.
In addition, the non-residential nature of the school also compels the students to resort to renting accommodation, which poses a security threat. Also, it has no offices, a school library, a Computer Laboratory, and only a bus for both its administration and students.
The School lacks water and the students had to make do with the existing small borehole for water.
The Management of the School appealed for a boarding status and a pick-up vehicle, and acknowledged the support of World Vision Ghana, the Member of Parliament for the area, the Zorko Youth in Accra, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for their assistance in providing learning and teaching materials, sportswear, motorbikes and cash to support the running of the school.
