District Public Health Assistant at the Kwabre East District in the Ashanti Region, Mrs. Hellen Aovare has disclosed that for the past three years, there has not been any recorded case of maternal mortality in any of the health facilities in the district.

She said stakeholders in the health sector in the district; especially the health directorate is going the extra mile to ensure the record is not only maintained but improved.

Mrs. Hellen Aovare made the disclosure at a four day workshop organized for midwives, nurses, health assistants, orderlies, ward assistants and doctors in the Kwabre East District to help in the complete eradication of maternal mortality.

According to her, maternal mortality continues to be a major risk for most pregnant women in Ghana as the national mortality ratio is estimated around 350 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births although there are wide district and regional variations. As such health officials must continue to create more awareness about maternal issues in their respective communities in order to deal with the menace.

She added that though about 95% of pregnant women in Ghana always seek antenatal care, only about 59% of them deliver at health facilities, posing many health risks to their lives since in the event of any complications, there might not be the right persons to attend to them. She therefore called on pregnant women to always make it a point to deliver at accredited health facilities to avoid any complications.

Mrs. Aovare attributed most of the complications to haemorhage, sepsis, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and abortion complications and made a passionate appeal to all stakeholders to play their parts in keeping maternal mortality at bay in the district.
