The Wasipe - Wura Anyame Kabassagya II, Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area, has called on people in the North Gonja District to give peace a chance to foster unity for sustainable development.

He said the development of the area would not be possible in an atmosphere of violence and that the law would deal ruthlessly with anybody who disturbed the current relative peace.

The Wasipe-Wura Anyame Kabassagya said this at a day’s educational forum jointly organized by the Assembly and Wasipe Union at the weekend in Daboya.

The forum, which brought together stakeholders from the education sector was under the theme: “Quality Education in the North Gonja District-The Way Forward”, sought to discuss the fallen standards of education in the District and suggest possible measures to salvage the situation.

He appealed to the people to solve disputes through dialogue and advised the citizens to play their respective roles to help improve standard of education in the area.

“Everybody has right and freedom but this cannot be enjoyed if there is violence and we look on while our children continue to fail woefully in Basic Education Certificate Examination”, he said.

The Wasipe-Wura Anyame Kabassagya commended the district assembly for its contribution to education and appealed to the government, local and international partners to support the Directorate to enhance and improve education in the area.

Mr James Tiyari Moari, Coordinating Director of the District, pledged the assembly’s commitment to work together with other stakeholders to improve infrastructure and to support the education Directorate to promote quality education.

He said the Assembly had budgeted for the construction of a bungalow for the District Director of Education and had also procured some solar lumps to be distributed to teachers as motivation for those who would be posted to the rural areas without electricity.

Mr Moari commended the Wasipe Union for their effort and concern towards ensuring that students in the area got quality education.

Mr Abdullah Sulemana, Chairman of the Education Committee of the Wasipe Union, donated educational materials comprising English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies text books and a computer  for distribution to junior high schools.

He said the Union had observed that educational standards had fallen in the past ten years and there was the need for all actors in the sector to play their roles effectively to ensure sound teaching and learning.
