The District Chief Executive for the Lawra District Assembly, Paschal Baylon Dery has suggested that in the quest to mitigate climate change effect on agriculture, there is the need to fully exploit the Black Volta for agric production.

The Black Volta, is a natural water resource which lies to the west making a boundary between the Lawra district and the Republic of Burkina Faso.

However, Mr. Paschal Baylon is worried that although the area is endowed with this natural resource it is undoubtedly being underutilized optimally for the growth of agro-based activities in the district.

He argued that the local farmers could use the resource in the cultivation of vegetables like pepper, okra, lettuce, tomatoes and onions amongst others which can offer an agro-based employment for the youth who migrate to the south in search of non-existing jobs during the dry season.

He further indicated that the area needs assistance for irrigation development and water management from its development partners.

On some of the best and modernized practices to improve agric production, the DCE pointed out that the farmers in the area must adopt the cultivation of shorter gestation crops for rain fed agriculture, whiles using irrigation to augment it.
