An exercise in search of bodies and survivors is currently on-going following the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake on Tueday.

There are conflicting reports as to the correct number of lives lost, while about 35 people are feared dead others believe about 18 are dead after a pontoon they were traveling on sunk at a village called Kpevi, near Krachi.

National Disaster Management Organization officials in the Kete Krachi have confirmed that 20 bodies have so far been retrieved from the lake.

It is believed that overcrowding was likely to be responsible for Tuesday’s disaster as 93 people were reportedly on the boat which was far beyond its capacity before the sad incident occurred.

The boat from Kete-Krachi to Ekpedzi in the Volta Region reportedly ran into a wood stump which pierced it and caused a gush of water to fill it and creating panic and chaos.

The victims were said to have refused to heed the advice of the Navy personnel who cautioned that the pontoon was not capable of containing all the 93 passengers aboard.

Fatal accidents on the Volta Lake is gradually becoming an annual affair as residents along the banks continue to throw caution to the wind and over load their boats while traveling on the lake.
