The Sene District Security Council is currently touring the scene of the accident which occurred on the Volta Lake on Tuesday.
The inspection team which includes officials of NADMO, Ghana Maritime Authority and Zoomlion is also expected to visit the community in which the deceased lived to sympathize and assess the effect of the unfortunate incident on their lives.
The accident happened on Tuesday when a boat ferrying mostly traders sunk at a village called Kpevi, near Krachi after their boat run into a wood stump which pierced it and caused a gush of water to fill it creating panic and chaos.
The exact number of the dead has not been determined yet as conflicting reports continues to come from the scene of the event. While some sources say about 35 people are feared dead others believe about 18 have perished.
Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com, the Sene District Chief Executive Hon. Dominic Napare stated that the team will during the exercise donate some relief items and other forms of assistance to the families of the deceased, adding that a comprehensive package will be arranged for the affected families at the end of the exercise.
He noted that the search to locate and retrieve bodies and save possible survivors has been intensified.
It is believed that overcrowding was likely to be responsible for Tuesday’s disaster as the boat operators refused to heed to the advice of the Navy personnel at the point where the boat was boarded.
Fatal accidents on the Volta Lake is gradually becoming an annual affair as residents along the banks continue to throw caution to the wind and over load their boats while traveling on the lake.
