Nima Market Tipped for 24-Hour Overhaul to Beat Traffic Nightmares

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, is pushing for Nima Market to be turned into a 24-hour economic hub under President Mahama’s flagship policy, a move that could spell relief for thousands of commuters plagued by legendary gridlock in the area.

The proposal

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Nima, the MP argued that upgrading the market to operate around the clock would decongest the area, particularly on Wednesdays, the official market day when traffic comes to a standstill.

The problem

On regular days, motorists already face heavy delays along routes to and from the market. But on Wednesdays, the situation spirals, with some commuters spending over two hours stuck in traffic just to get through.

The solution

Baba Jamal believes a 24-hour model would spread shopping and trading activities across day and night, flattening peak-hour chaos. He also pointed to the market’s existing underground parking lot as a key asset that could be better utilised to ease congestion, boost business, create jobs, and drive local economic growth.

The bigger picture

The plan aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy policy, which encourages businesses and public services to operate in shift-based cycles to maximise productivity.

If implemented, traders and residents could enjoy more flexible trading hours, safer and less chaotic market operations, and improved mobility. The MP expressed optimism that the transformation would enhance revenue generation and spur overall development in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
