Create more jobs for the locals -MP implores Newmont

Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North constituency has appealed to the Management of the Newmont Ahafo North Project to create more jobs for the local people within the mine enclave.?

She also asked Newmont to endeavour to engage and empower more women to enhance the socio-economic livelihoods of the people. Dr. Prempeh, also a Minister of State at the Office of the President made the appeal during a tour of the Ahafo North Project site at Afrisipakrom in the Tano North Municipality.

The MP said job expectations among the locals were high due to the advent of the mine, saying "we also have professionals and mining engineers who can work here".?

She asked the mine to provide opportunities, engage and provide the teeming unemployed youth within the mine's enclave with employable skill training, "so that they can also have decent jobs to fend for themselves and their families".? Dr. Prempeh said the Local Content Act enjoined the mining company to create?jobs locally for the people "so that you can also have the peace of mind to do your work".?

Mr Andries Havenga, the Project Director, Newmont Ahafo North who took Dr. Prempeh around the project site said it would begin actual mining by the end of 2024, as it had projected between 270,000 and 325,000 ounces of gold annually.

They were accompanied by Mr Justice Fonteng and Mr Joseph Danso, Mine Manager and Senior Manager, External Relations respectively of the Newmont Ahafo North Project.??

The Ahafo North project, with a projected 13-year lifespan, according to Mr Havenga covered a concessional area of?about 10,000 acres of land spread across five major communities in the Tano North Municipality of the region. The communities are Afrisipkarom, Susuanso, Terchire, Adrobaa and Yamfo
