Sekyere Central cries for district hospital

An appeal has been made to the government to take urgent steps toestablish a district hospital in Sekyere Central to provide the people with improved access to quality healthcare.

The district with a population in excess of 72,000 is served by three health centres, a clinic and few Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds.

Mr. Danso Yeboah, the District Health Director, said â€œthis would be a major step forward it is long overdue.

He was speaking at the Ashanti Regional launch of this years World Glaucoma Week celebration at Beposo, a community in the district.

He used the occasion to encourage people, who had not signed up for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to do so, telling them that, the benefits were enormous.

Mr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, a Deputy Regional Director of Health, advised that everybody should visit the hospital at least twice every year to have their eyes tested for glaucoma.

The disease has been identified as one of the leading causes of blindness in the world.

Out of the 600,000 people suffering from blindness in Ghana, 10 per cent, was caused by glaucoma.
