OFFINSO N: Give priority to Girls’ Child Education

The Coordinator in-change of Girls’ Education in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti region, Madam Bernice Nsoh Akolgo has called on parents and guardians to give priority to their Girl Child Education and do not allow negative implications of our socio-cultural beliefs to impede their education.

This she said, is the way that the female child can get equal opportunities like the boys.

Madam Nsoh Akolgo made the call at a durbar to climax this year’s Girl Child education celebration week at Asouso Senior High School in District.

She said “with modernity and changes in time, the reasons cited previously for denying girls educational access are fortunately no longer tenable today. Girls’ education is very important, that is why the Girls’ Education Unit was established in 1997 to promote the education of girls and also work to eradicate barriers to their Education.”

This, the Coordinator noted was vital to churning out responsible mothers and women leaders in our societies, emphasizing that there are greater advantages for parents, families and a country when we educate our girls.



She stressed on the need to take girl child education seriously, affirming that the delivery of quality education to girls is a collective responsibility which each and everyone has to take on without any reservation.

She, therefore, called on Ghanaians especially women to join in the advocacy to support and empower the girl child discover their potentials, quoting the famous Ghanaian Statesman, Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey that “If you educate a man, you educate an individual but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.”

The Offinso North District Director of Education Mr Michael I. Darbbey-Tannian stated that “the development of this country is inextricably tied to the education of the girls' Child and it is only when we educate our girls that we can successfully fight poverty in this country and our homes, because of correlation between education and productivity.”

He added that through education, our girls will be able to acquire knowledge and skills, be well informed of their rights and responsibilities in society and this is one effective tool of fighting social challenges-teenage pregnancy, child-marriage, prostitution, child labour and the abuse of drugs.



He frowned on the use of social and cultural misconceptions to discriminate against in terms of educational success and noted that “the best form of economic independence and empowerment can only be achieved in Ghana through the education of our girls.”

The District Chief Executive for the area, Mr. David Kwasi Asare observed that the introduction of Free Senior High School policy by the Nana Akufo-Addo led government is giving hope to girls in the country saying “The introduction of the Free Senior High School policy has lessened the financial burden of parents with many now pushing their daughters to school with no excuse for any girl to be left behind.

He said education was now accessible to all and called on parents to take full advantage of the opportunity and educate their children, especially girls and called on parents to do away with socio-cultural misconceptions that discriminated against girls and allowed their daughters to enjoy education to become responsible adults.

The DCE disclosed that plans are far advanced to construct a girls and boys dormitories as well as a playing field for the school to enable the school participate in sporting activities both at the district and regional levels.
