Planting for food and jobs campaign launched

The ceremony which was held at the New Juaben Municipal Assembly Hall gave insight to the farmers as to the new measures put in place to create both food and jobs for the Nation.
The programme which is an initiative of the New Patriotic Party seeks to improve the livelihood of our farmers to enable them help grow the economy. It is also designed to encourage all citizens both urban and rural to take up farming as a full time or part time activity
The Eastern Regional Economic Planning Officer, Mr. J. D. Awuah assured farmers that activities of Fulani herdsmen in the Eastern Region will be strictly regulated at the commencement of the "Planting for food and jobs" programme.
Mr. Awuah stressed that the Regional Campaign Committee would do all it could to end this menace to ensure a smooth implementation of the programme.
The Regional Director for Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), Dr. Frederick Gyebi-Twum stated that subsidized fertilizers, planting materials, alongside extension service for farmers would be supplied.
Dr. Frederick Gyebi-Twum indicated that the programme would target selected cereals including rice, maize and sorghum. "Such crops would be grown organically" he pointed out.
On the part of the farmers, they appealed to government to enforce the security agencies to end the Fulani menace and also ensure prompt supply of resource and funds for the programme to succeed.
The Municipal coordinating Director, Alhaji Mahamadu Azonko urged all farmers to put in their best to ensure a smooth operation of the programme.
The eight (8) MDA that have their committee inaugurated included New Juaben Municipal, Asuogyaman District, Upper Manya Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo, Akuapem North, Akuapem South and Suhum Municipal.
