The Asante Akyem Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region have resolved to regulate activities of small scale miners as part of efforts to monitor their activities in the area.

The regulation is also expected to help the Assembly improve on its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) through proper supervision of various scale mining activities to help finance the assembly’s numerous infrastructural challenges.

Speaking at the ongoing assembly’s general meeting, the Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Braimah Boyong however admitted that contributions from these small scales miners into the assembly’s coffers could not be undermined but noted that their activities could be properly checked if they are duly registered and recognized by the assembly.

He bemoaned how most forest reserves and water bodies in the areas have been badly affected by behaviours of these small scale miners, adding that the situation is due to lack of proper registration and certification to regulate their activities.

Alhaji Braimah reiterated that his outfit was currently dealing with the situation and will soon roll-out plans to curtail the menace.

In other related developments, the MCE have also called on the Ghana Highways Authority to as a matter of urgency reconstruct portions of the Konongo highway which posed as a death trap in the area. According to him, official complains to the Ghana Highways Authority has fallen on death ears.
