The tour held on Saturday, July 26, 2026, formed part of efforts to promote the rich historical heritage of the Ahanta people and position the municipality as an important heritage tourism destination in Ghana.

The excursion, organised by the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, took participants to Fort Gross Friedrichsburg at Princes Town, Cape Three Points and Fort Batenstein at Butre.

The first stop was Fort Gross Friedrichsburg, a historic fortress at Princes Town constructed in the seventeenth century by the Brandenburg African Company. Participants were taken through the historical significance of the fort and its connection to trade and European activities along the Gold Coast.

The delegation subsequently visited Cape Three Points, the southernmost point of mainland Ghana, where participants explored the historic lighthouse and the surrounding coastal landscape.

The final destination was Fort Batenstein at Butre, which has strong historical links with the Ahanta Kingdom and the activities of Dutch colonial authorities along the coast.

The visit also included a courtesy call on the Chief of Butre at his palace, where the delegation paid homage to the traditional authority and customs of the area.The tour attracted an international delegation, including the High Commissioner of Barbados to Ghana, H.E. Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, and the Ambassador of Suriname to Ghana, H.E. Fidelia Graand-Galon, and the UNESCO Representative to Ghana, Edmond Moukala N’Gouemo.

School children, students and young people from communities across the Ahanta West Municipality also participated in the excursion, with many of them visiting the historic forts for the first time.Their participation was aimed at exposing the younger generation to the history and cultural heritage of the area while encouraging greater interest in heritage preservation and tourism.

The heritage tour also highlighted the municipality's potential for tourism development, particularly through its combination of historic forts, beaches, coastal landscapes and traditional culture.

The organisers expressed the vision of using the Heritage Month celebrations to preserve Ahanta's history, strengthen cultural ties with the African diaspora and attract greater attention to the municipality's tourism assets.

The 2026 Ahanta Heritage Month was held throughout July under the theme of reconnecting the people with the history, culture and heritage of Ahanta West.
