The project seeks to construct 3 factories and to de-risk and structure infrastructure investment projects in an effort to help attract financing from the private sector to national development agendas.

Speaking at the launch at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality, Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia said Ghana is one of two countries in Africa that made it through the vetting process for this project in 2018.

He reiterated that the initiative sets out to construct a minimum of 100,000 affordable housing units to help mitigate Ghana’s infrastructural deficit.

He noted that, the Government of Ghana is supporting the Ministry of Works and Housing with UN Funding which has been secured to provide all ancillary facilities.

He explained that funding for the project is solely provided by UNOPS which will provide about 5 billion dollars of financing with government playing a facilitating role.

On his part, the Executive Director of UNOPS and UN Under Secretary General, Grete Fremo, also described the program as a "game changer" for the beneficiary countries, including Ghana.

According to him, the programme is arranged in a way that does not impose any financial liability on government and requires no government guarantees to deliver an affordable housing model which will include not only the homes to be built, but the related mortgage system.

He added that this will enable working Ghanaians to purchase a home that comes with all the amenities a decent home should contain.
