The demolishing exercise is expected to pave the way for expansion works to commence on the N6 highway.

The exercise will begin from ofankor to Amasaman through to Nsawam as the government looks to expand that stretch of the road to help improve transportation.

The MCE, who revealed this at a stakeholders meeting on Wednesday said, the move by the assembly to pull down all illegal structures along the highway was based on Act 936, session 91 of the Local Government Act which bars a person from carrying out a physical development in a district except with the prior written approval in the form of a written permit issued by the District Planning Authority.’

According to him, occupants of the said area have no permits and other legal documents; hence the assembly is left with no other choice than to pull those structures down.

He added that work on the road is expected to begin in two weeks’ time and therefore charged residents of the area to give the contractor the maximum support to enable him finish the project on time.

On his part, chief valuer for the Ghana Highways Authority, Mr Alex Sekyi-Nsiah also revealed that the government had since 2006 spent almost 40 million Ghana Cedis to legally acquire that portion along the road.

This, he added, therefore makes it easy for expansion works to be carried out by the Ghana Highways Authority.

Meanwhile, some affected persons who spoke in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com expressed shock at the short notice given them by the assembly to relocate.

They also called on the Assembly to fast track the payment of their claims before work commences.
