The project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Water and Sanitation for Urban Poor (WSUP) and the Ghana Water Company Limited with funding from the Coca Cola Foundation (TCCF) and UK Department for International Development (DFID).
The project which commenced in October 2015 with an investment of over nine hundred and twenty one thousand eight hundred and twenty five dollars was to provide improved water supply by extending GWCL services network to Akorem and Adukrom in the Asokore Municipality.
However, GWCL Ashanti Region prioritized the Adukrom and Akorem areas for the implementation of the project as they were the most depressed in their operational area and could benefit from access to improved and regular water supply.
The project was designed to support GWCL in addressing the challenges of;
• Lack of access to safe drinking for people living in these low-income areas.
• Lack of scalable, replicable and financially sustainable water management models demonstrated at a sufficient scale to be considered viable for citywide scale up.
• Lack of business models demonstrating the value for GWCL in serving low-income communities.
In the process communities including Sawaba, Sepe, dote, Asokore Mampong in the Asokore Munucipal Assembly, and Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya District Assembly benefited.
Project Details include:
• the construction of 75 standpipes
• 15580 meters of distribution lines with associated fittings
• 4 valve chambers
• 3 wash out chambers
• 4 fire hydrant chambers
• 1 air valves
• A 200 cubic meter capacity high -level tank
• 75 standpipe vendors trained on effective water sales business, and
• 6 community management models formed in the beneficiary communities.
And the standpipes are distributed as follows: Sawaba, 10, Sepe dote, 6, Asokore Mampong 10, Akorem 19, Adukrom 20, Abuakwa 10.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Alidu Seidu expressed disgust at the way some people pollute water bodies that serve a lot of homes and called for positive mindsets towards water bodies.
He noted that the completion of the project means an increase in quality of treated water to various homes, blockage of leakages, as well as job creation for vendors.
He called on all and sundry to repair all leakages at homes, offices to prevent wastage.
The MCE was full of gratitude to the sponsors and other individuals to played diverse roles in the construction of the project.
According to him, the Assembly plays much emphasis on water and sanitation and is pursuing the agenda of providing to water to a lot of communities, adding some boreholes have been drilled at some communities and more are in the process to be drilled.
Sanitation
On sanitation, he called for concerted efforts from all to the municipality clean, adding;
• The Assembly is in the process of purchasing twenty tricycles, 2 for each electoral area to help enhance refuse collection.
• Instituted first Saturday of every month as Municipal Sanitation day.
• Will procure sanitation tools to aid the clean-up exercise and urged all to participate massively on such days. Putting up measures to make it a bye-law so that those who will not participate can be prosecuted.
• He also disclosed that Adukrom Old Town toilet will be demolished and rebuild.
The representative from the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor, Mr. Samuel Adjei said their quest is to help communities overcome their developmental challenges, and Adukrom and its environs have been identified as having water challenges, hence their collaboration with the GWCL for this intervention.
He said the project took cognizance of welfare of women for which some 60 women have been trained as vendors, thus giving them employment.
He also disclosed that the water system being the first of its kind, its success will inform similar projects in other communities faced with water problems.
The Adukromhene who was chairman of the occasion was grateful that cool heads finally prevailed despite some challenging moments towards the commencements of the project, and today the project is completed and water made available to all of them.
He called for unity among the people so that more of such projects will come their way for the good of all the people, adding that though other projects like the ICT centre faced similar challenges today they have it and their children are benefiting from it.
He commended the past and present MCEs, as well as the leadership of the Presbyterian Church for the various roles they played in making the project successful.
