The initial election, held on February 12th, 2024, witnessed a contest between Hon. Charles Dwumfour, the incumbent Presiding Member, and Joseph Adjei Nenkabo. In the first round, Dwumfour secured 27 votes, while his opponent garnered 25. However, in a subsequent round where Nenkabo withdrew his candidacy in support of his colleague,  Dwumfour fell short of the required 38 votes, obtaining only 31 against 24 NO votes.

Today's session saw a renewed effort to elect a Presiding Member, with Salifu Iddrisu and Hon. Justice Nkrumah Boateng as the contenders. In the initial round, Iddrisu obtained 32 votes, while his competitor secured 21. However, this result necessitated a second round of voting. Despite this, neither candidate managed to secure the required threshold, with the votes standing at 30 and 25, respectively.

Isaac Kofi Marfo, the District Chief Executive, expressed gratitude to the members for their patience throughout the election process. He acknowledged the need to address the impasse and emphasized the importance of rectifying the situation in subsequent sittings.

The failure to elect a Presiding Member has significant implications for the governance and decision-making processes of the Atwima Mponua District Assembly. It underscores the importance of cooperation and consensus-building among members to ensure effective leadership and administration. Moving forward, efforts must be made to resolve the deadlock and facilitate the election of a suitable candidate who can effectively represent the interests of the assembly and its constituents.

The Atwima Mponua District Assembly's repeated failure to elect a Presiding Member highlights the challenges inherent in the democratic process. However, it also presents an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to uphold the principles of good governance and accountability. Stakeholders must work together to overcome this impasse and restore stability to the assembly's leadership structure.
