Abuakwa North Assembly inherits huge legacy debt

The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has announced an inherited legacy debt to the tune of about Two Hundred and Thirty-Five Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety-Two Ghana Cedis (GHs 235,992.00) from the East Akyem, now Abuakwa South Municipality.

The debt encompasses the contract sum of the total cost of about six abandoned projects at varying stages of implementation from the former East Akim Assembly.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Mr Owusu Twum Ampofo who disclosed this at the Assembly’s First Ordinary Meeting at Kukurantum, the Municipal capital, expressed fear that the current cost for the completion of the projects is likely to go high considering the fact that, some of the projects date back to 2010.

He noted that the projects and the outstanding debts were officially made known to the assembly earlier this year, at a time he said the assembly had already prepared and submitted its 2019 budget.

He bemoaned that, the development has push the assembly in an awkward position as contractors working on the said projects have started mounting pressure on the Assembly to get paid for work done so far.

He however, indicated that the Assembly will soon validate the date and access the validity of the inherited projects to further determine the actual outstanding cost before submitting same consideration during mid-year budget review.

The MCE assured that work on all the six abandoned projects will soon restart in order to complete them for use.
