The Assembly comprising of 19 members (11 elected, 6 government appointees, District Chief Executive and Member of Parliament) were sworn in by a High Court Judge, His Lordship Charles Gyamfi Dankwah.
His Lordship Dankwah cautioned them to be law-abiding and be mindful of the oath they have sworn. He also entreated them to get copies of the standing orders of the Assembly and be abreast of their duties and responsibilities in order to make them effective and efficient in serving their communities.
In the inaugural address of the President of the Republic read on his behalf by a Minister of State at the Presidency, Hon. Dr. Kweku Afriyie, he congratulated the Assembly members for their election to serve their various electoral areas.
He added that they should be mindful of the fact that they are an integral part of Ghana’s governance system and should, therefore, work hard to guarantee development locally.
‘You have a role to play in ensuring that the government delivers on its promises to Ghanaians and your inauguration today is another important milestone towards our decentralisation and local governance objectives’ he said.
He also charged them to advance the implementation of government policies and programmes in the coordinated programme of economic and social development policies.
The President also urged the Assembly to religiously use its bye-laws to enforce compliance of sanitation management and environmental health standards to ensure cleanliness.
For his part, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Maurice Jonas Woode also congratulated the Assembly members and reminded them of the enormous task that lies ahead of them. He urged them not to be politically partisan in their deliberations just as what happened in the first Assembly.
He revealed that one major challenge confronting the Assembly was its low revenue generation. He, therefore, appealed to the Assembly members to critically contribute their quota to increase the revenue generation of funds for development by the Assembly. He added that the Assembly has begun with many developmental projects and the cooperation from the new Assembly will urge them to do more.
‘There is a huge task ahead of this Assembly to mobilize revenue considering the enormous revenue generation challenges confronting it’ he said.
The Chairman for the event, Nana Anin Agyekum II, Gyasehene and Regent of Akrofuom also appealed to the Assembly members to always seek the interest of the district in their deliberations and not their selfish interest. This he said will help the district to develop well and will eventually lead to their re-election in the next District Assembly elections.
