At its first meeting after the inauguration of the Assembly, the two contestants could not garner the number of votes to be declared as a Presiding Member.

The election was supervised by the District Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Cynthia Adwobi Sarfo and her team.

The contest was between the immediate outgone Presiding Member of the House and former Assemblyman for Akrofuom East Electoral Area, Hon. Peter Amponsah now a Government Appointee and Hon. Douglas Fosu Mensah of Nana Okai Electoral Area.

After two rounds of voting, each contest produced the same results. Mr. Peter Amponsah polled 11 votes as against 7 votes of Hon. Douglas Fosu Mensah.

Prior to the election, the District Electoral Commissioner announced that per the laws, the winner needed to get two-thirds of the total votes cast of 18 members excluding the Member of Parliament who is an ex-officio member. Thus the winner needed to get 12 votes out of the 18 votes cast.

The District Coordinating Director in admonishing the members prior to the elections appealed to the Assembly members to look beyond their personal interest and vote for the right person to lead the House in its deliberations.

He revealed that the position of the Presiding Member was very critical and it is important that the right person was elected and the sooner the better for the Assembly.

A seemingly worried District Chief Executive, Maurice Jonas Woode also appealed to the assembly members to consider the numerous tasks the Assembly has to undertake and not to delay the election of the Presiding Member in order to kick start the operations of the second Assembly.

Nana Anin Agyekum II, Gyaasehene and Regent for Akrofuom also echoed the need for the Assembly members to unanimously decide on one of the two contestants and forge ahead to work to elevate the district to the standards it deserves.

He added that they should not vote on political partisan lines, relation or familiarity but rather vote on competence and ensure that the electorates also get value for voting them to the Assembly.

Mr Asante again announced that the next election will be between the next ten to fourteen days as the law states.
