Asante Mampong embarks on clean-up exercise

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Mampong Municipal Assembly, Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Thomas Appiah Kubi has praised the people of Mampong Municipality for embracing the Clean and Green Campaign.

Thomas Appiah Kubi made this commendation when he joined Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mampongmanhene and the people of the area to undertake a massive clean-up exercise throughout the municipality.

The Mampong Municipal Assembly with support from the Silver Stool, Asante-Mampong has instituted a clean-up exercise to be undertaking every 40-day (Dapaa), a day before Akwasidea in all parts of the municipality as part of activities of the Clean and Green Campaign.

The Clean and Green Campaign, an initiative brought up by the government to ensure cleanliness of the country sought to among other things to promote good sanitation and environment in Ghana.

Under the initiative, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are expected to spearhead in whipping up the interest and enthusiasm of the people to engage in activities that encourage and enhance good environment as well aspromoting and ensuring the cleaning of the environment. MMDAs are also to encourage theplanting and sustaining of trees behind houses and around water bodies, protecting nature reserve as well as the improvement in sanitation.

Mr Thomas Appiah Kubi was therefore highly impressed by the high turn-out of people who came out in their numbers to take part in the exercise. The MCE, who went round to see how the exercise was been done, at some places also joined the people in some of the communities in the municipality to sweep, desilt choked gutters and drains and clear heavy bushy areas.


Addressing the participants, DaasebreOseiBonsu II, Mampongmanhene underscored the importance exercise. He urged them to avail themselves for the exercise and participate actively whenever they are called to do so, adding that they should maintain their communal spirit to ensure cleanliness and good sanitation practices in the municipality.

Speaking with some of the participants, the Chief of Abrukutuaso, Nana BaffourAgyeiBonsafo, said, the initiative is really good. He said it has brought cleanliness in his community but tools to perform this exercise is their major problem adding that he would therefore plan with his assembly man on how to get tools such as brooms, hoes, cutlasses for the work to be easy.



On his part, the Assemblyman of the Electoral Area, Hon. Smith Amponsah, mentioned that, the exercise is worthy but their biggest challenge is tools for the exercise such as brooms, cutlasses, wellington boots, hoes, etc. that will aid for the smoothness of the work.
He therefore said that, the Municipal Chief Executive should plead with the government to distribute the necessary tools for the work.

Pastor Alexander Kojo Nyantakyi, a Pastor of Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Peace Congregation, Abrukutuaso, stated that this initiative from the government is biblical, because the bible talks about cleanliness being next to Godliness, therefore every individual must see cleanliness as an important thing. He added that, this exercise has brought about the reduction of diseases created by dirt such as malaria and cholera, therefore government and the whole country should ensure the sustainability of this worthy initiative.
