Bono Peace Council sensitizes schools on conflict management

The Bono Regional Peace Council has begun organizing peace education sensitization fora, targeting Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Bono Region on conflict management, prevention and resolution towards sustainable peace.

The programme, which started at the Sunyani SHS and Notre Dame Girl’s SHS, had been very successful.

The essence of the programme was to engage young people and youth community leaders in peace efforts, decision-making and institutional reform process, and an opportunity to reform areas that have direct impact on their lives.

Alhaji Suallah Abdallah Quandah, the Bono Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council (NPC) in his speech at Notre Dame Girl’s Senior High School, Fiapre on peace education, noted that there was the need to involve the youth to generate culture of peace and violent free environment by recognizing the essential role of young people in preventing and resolving conflict and sustaining peace.

Alhaji Suallah noted that incorporation and utilization of young people in peace building processes would therefore facilitate their transformation from agents of violent conflict to agents of peace. He observed that one of the significant roles which the young people can play in peace and conflict resolution was for them to be the ‘change’ “This will make them change attitudes towards people, traditions, religion and beliefs and eventually respect and appreciate diversity as normal part of life”, he emphasized.

The Executive Secretary reiterated the importance to sensitize and provide young people with training opportunities to take active part in peace building and conflict resolutions as mediators, community mobilizers, humanitarian and workers.

Madam Helen Galadima, the Peace Coordinator of Notre Dame Girl’s Senior High School thanked the leadership of the Bono Regional Peace Council for the sensitizing the students.

She noted that they trained their students to be role models in society and that conflict management sensitization would enhance their integration in the society.

She said the school also collaborates with Child advocacy Centre in Kumasi and other NGOs to educate the students on streetism, trafficking and peace.
