Disability is not inability - PWDs told

Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) have been encouraged to consider themselves capable to hold any position in this country and also venture into any economic activity of their choice to better their lives. They were also reminded that disability does not mean inability therefore must rise to overcome the challenges they may encounter in their endeavours.

The Upper Manya Krobo District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Alfred Boafo Mensah gave the advise when the department in collaboration with the assembly presented some income generating items to 45 Person Living with Disabilities in the district at Asesewa. The items include industrial sewing machines, cassava milling machines, deep freezers and ice chests.

This bring to one hundred and sixty (160), the number of people who have been supported in diverse ways in the district this year. Other assistance include educational, medical and financial support.

Mr. Mensah cautioned the beneficiaries against selling the items but use them for their intended purposes so to become financial independent. He also encouraged them not to see their current predicament as an obstacle in advancing in life and achieving their desires. They should therefore be focused, determined and put the items into good use in order to enhance their wellbeing. The Social Welfare Director called on Ghanaians not to stigmatize against Persons Living with Disabilities but rather show them love.

The District Chief Executive, Joe Sam said the gesture is one of the good initiatives by the government to help prevent people with these unfortunate conditions from begging for arms on the streets but economically independent. He told the beneficiaries to take advantage of this and other numerous opportunities the Akuffo Addo led administration is offering them and vote to retain the NPP government in power come 7th December.

The District's Chairman of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, Joseph Nartey Kortey thanked the government for establishing the Persons with Disability Management Fund to care for their needs. He appealed NGOs, CSOs, individuals and all institutions to come to their aid.
