The pre-school education which was integrated into the mainstream education in Ghana some few years ago has not received the needed support in terms of school infrastructure, furniture and other teaching and learning materials.
The revelation came on the back of a forum organized by Hope Alive 360 Foundation, an NGO in partnership with the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-GHANA) with support from the Hewlett Foundation to discuss the current state of service delivery as part of the “I AM AWARE” project activities at Bechem in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo region.
The forum which brought together duty bearers from the Tano South Municipality, citizen groups and members of the I AM AWARE Social Action group discussed the current state of service delivery in the healthcare, education, security, water and sanitation sectors to bring stakeholders up to speed on the successes, challenges of service delivery in these sectors and what duty bearers were doing to overcome the challenges and improve upon service delivery.
Other challenges identified with education service delivery included bad roads which affect supervision and lack of office for circuit supervisors in circuit centres, overly longer stay of some teachers in particular communities and drinking of alcohol by some teachers during contact hours.
On health, pregnant women not attending antenatal sessions were identified to be a major challenge to quality healthcare delivery. According to the Municipal Health Directorate, the low rate of antenatal attendance and pregnant women delivery at home especially in remote communities continued to be a major contributing factor to maternal and child mortality in the District.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Tano South Municipal Assembly, Mr. Ayambiri Akaditi tasked the Social Action Groups, citizens groups established as part of the “I AM AWARE” project to furnish the Assembly with data on water, sanitation and hygiene challenges in the various schools and health facilities to help the Assembly to address them.
On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tano South, Mr. Collins Ofinam revealed that the Assembly has committed to supply one thousand desks to basic schools in the Municipality. He however appealed to parents to also support their children with things like desks since the municipality has a lot of needs to meet with little resources.
The “I AM AWARE” programme is a Social Accountability project implemented by Hope Alive 360 Foundation in the Tano South Municipality in partnership with the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-GHANA) with support from the Hewlett Foundation aimed at improving service delivery through informed citizen.
