The 7th Mampong Municipal Assembly inaugurated

The Mampong Municipal Assembly has inaugurated its 7th Assembly on Thursday, 23rd January 2020 at the Forecourt of the Mampong Municipal Assembly.

The inauguration of the Assembly members ushers in the newly elected Assembly members and government appointees as legally accepted members of the 7th Mampong Municipal Assembly.

Reading the inaugural address on behalf of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the Representative of the President and Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Hon Barbara Ayisi Archer called on the Assembly members to be minded of the fact that Assemblies are a critical part of Government and have a role to play in ensuring that the government delivers on its promises to Ghanaians.

She charged Assembly members together with their Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), to advance the implementation of Government programmes in the co-ordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies 2017-2024.

She reminded them again that, they are being inaugurated at a time when efforts are being made by Government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), to enhance internally generated funds (IGF) of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), particularly in the area of property rate. She, therefore, asked them to take advantage of automation and other innovative systems developed by the Ministry to improve their IGF.

The Deputy Minister who is also the NPP MP for Cape Coast North further went on to say that, this can be achieved if street naming and property addressing is pursued vigorously, working hand-in-hand with the National Digital Property Addressing System and the Ghana Post Service (GPS), and also work with the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission to have rateable properties in their jurisdiction valued to inform a more effective and transparent property rating.

Hon. Ayisi Archer urged the Assembly members to devise special client sensitive approaches to mobilize these rates, devoid of challenges to the ratepayers and as they grow their IGF, it should be possible to increase allowances paid to members. She added that they should work with their Assemblies to ensure compliance with the building rules and regulations on the zoning and development of lands, and ensure that lands are developed according to approved plans and designated land use, to avoid flooding and accompanying loss of lives and property.



She said, one major function of the assembly is to explore avenues for the creation of employment for people, particularly the youth.
She charged the Assembly to use its by-laws to enforce compliance in sanitation management and environmental health standards and rules to ensure a clean and healthy environment.

She wished the Assembly members well and reminded them that their people require of them the traits of selflessness, devotion to duty, very accountable stewardship, and above all, the ability to deliver efficient services to improve on their quality of life and promote prosperity.

In his welcome address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Thomas Appiah Kubi pointed out that the inaugural meeting marks the seventh milestone journey of the seventh set of MMDAs to have been constituted in the period of the Fourth Republic, making another history in the country’s decentralization and Local Governance System.

The MCE congratulated the newly elected Assembly members and wished them all the best in their quest to bring development to their electoral areas, and noted that their election as Assembly members is a mark of confidence the electorates have in them. He said the members of the House, both the elected and government appointees are expected to live up to the task ahead and also to the expectation of the people who voted for them and the confidence of the President who entrusted them into office.

Hon, Thomas Appiah Kubi further stated that the success of the Mampong Municipal Assembly will largely depend on the level of co-operation between the Assembly Members and the Municipal Chief Executive as well as the management staff in the discharge of their functions as Hon. Assembly Members. He, therefore, called on all members to bury their political differences and work together for the positive transformation of the Municipality.

On his part, the Asante-Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who chaired the colorful ceremony, advised the new Assembly members that, their title Honourables is not just for fun but the work you will do really determine if you should be called Honourable.

The occupant of the Silver Stool of the Asante Kingdom, further pleaded with, Hon. Barbara Ayisi Archer that government comes to the aid of Asante Mampong when it comes to the construction of affordable house and storm drains, and promised that any land the government will need will be given to them free.

Responding to the plea of Nana, Hon. Ayisi Archer assured Daasebre Osei Bonsu II that his request would be sent to the government for consideration.

The Newly Elected Assembly members were sworn in by His Worship, Godwin Kpogli, a Magistrate Judge at the Mampong Magistrate Court.
