Akuapem North District defy odds to win reading competition
Akuapem North District scored 125 points after three rounds of contest in the grand finale to be crowned winners of the Eastern Regional Library reading festival .

The team, represented by Maame Esi Offei Baffoe and Benjamin Edan Asomani, all form two pupils of Nana Ankobea Takyiwaa School at Akuapem Mampong, dominated and won all three contests 50, 50 and 25 respectively.
The team from East Akim Municipality came second with 120 points, while Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality came third with 75 points.
The winners from Akuapem North for their prize took home a trophy, a plaque, books, certificate and a cash prize as well as souvenirs from the sponsors.
The second place was taken by the East Akim Municipality and for their prize they got a plaque, books, a cash prize, certificate, as well as souvenirs, while the third place was taken by Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, which also received a plaque, books, certificate, cash.
The other two districts that made it to the finals are Fanteakwa District and Kwahu East, which took the fourth and fifth places with 30 and 20 points respectively.
All the 20 Municipalities and Districts that participated, as well as the contestants were presented with certificates.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Hayford Siaw said one of the objectives for declaring 2019 as a year of reading was to promote literacy and life-long learning through interventions such as literacy
related programmes.
He said the authority is on a transformational journey, revamping its operations to provide the best library services to the public.
Mr. Siaw said the authoritys latest initiative was the development of an Application (APP), Ghana library App to provide electronic reading materials to patrons by a click on their phones.
He then entreated teachers and parents who were major stakeholders to encourage their wards to visit the libraries and make the best use of it.
Maame Esi Offei Baffour, one of the winners said what propelled her to go far in the contest was her zeal to read.
The team from Akuapem North will represent the Eastern Region at the Ghana Library National Reading Festival slated for September this year.
