The project is a comprehensive initiative that touches on all sectors of WASH activities to achieve the sustainable Development Goals 6 (SDG6) which relates to access to clean water and good sanitation for all by 2030.
Launching the programme, Mr. George Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister said the objective of the project and master plans was to ensure an effective Coordinating and implementation of WASH activities and therefore appealed to all the stakeholders to demonstrate their commitment to ensure the aim is achieved.
He explained government was committed to ensure that projects initiated are successfully executed in the region. "Most of these projects funded by the partners are in direct alignment to the government interventions which also proves that both are on the path of not only sustainable development but job creation as well", he emphasized.
He noted that since 2015, Ghana and other United Nations member states have made a commitment to play their part in the achievement of specified goals of SDGs6.
He commended the Asutifi North District Assembly for their hard work and commitment to the programme that has opened additional doors for the region to continue to benefit from the WASH programme. The scaling up of the three MDAs (Municipal and Districts) brings the number to 4 MDAs after the pilot in the Asutifi North District in 2017.
He lamented the poor sanitation situation in our major cities and called all stakeholders to come on board to make the initiative a success as well as to improve environmental and sanitation management in the country.
The Chairman of the occasion, Nana Anim Dankwah, Saamanhene of Kenyasi No.1 for his part, commended the partners for a wonderful initiative aimed at providing portable water and sanitation services for residents.
Mr Boakye pledged the readiness and commitment of the traditional authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
Asutifi North District commenced the initiative where the IRC and its partners collaborated with the assembly to prepare and implement a 13 year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Master Plan (2017-2030) under the Asutifi North Ahonidie Mpontuo (ANAM) programme.
The initiative sought to promote universal access to safe water, basic sanitation and hygiene services to about 84,420 people by 2030. The three (3) new assemblies include Asunafo North Municipal, Tano North Municipal and Asunafo South District Assembly.
The new MDAs later demonstrated their commitment to make the initiative successful in their speeches by the planning officers and Coordinating Directors. Partners include IRC-Ghana, Conrad N Foundation, Aquaya Institute, World Vision and Safe Water amongst others.
