The District Chief Executive (DCE), for the Kwabre East District in the Ashanti region, Mr. Iddisa Adams has called on politicians and people in the helms of affairs, to be responsible to the people who put them into office.
“As politicians it is necessary that we continue to be of good service to the people who put us there. We owe them good governance and effective flow of information”, he said.
Mr. Adams made the call when he addressed the First Ordinary meeting of the Kwabre East District Assembly at Mamponteng, the district capital.
He advised that as politicians, they must always seek the concerns of the local people in the formation and implementation stages of programmes and policies. This he said will ensure ownership and acceptance by the citizenry.
He said if Assembly members in the district will heed to this advice, it will encourage the citizenry to actively participate in activities of the Assembly and even allow them to make useful suggestions pertaining to their needs.
Mr. Iddisa Adams also reiterated government’s vision of running a transparent and an open government where the rights of the citizenry would not be undermined. He therefore, appealed to Assembly members not to indulge in activities that will trample upon the freedom and rights of the citizenry.
He added that the Assembly’s estimated budget of GH¢557,550 to be generated internally, can only be achieved if assembly members and stakeholders play their roles effectively.
He therefore urged members to explain the importance of taxes to their local people to increase the revenue of the Assembly for more developmental projects to be undertaken.
For his part the newly elected Presiding member who also doubles as the chief of Asonomanso, a community in the district, Nana Asumin Gyekye, also appealed to the Assembly members to unite and work together for the growth of the district.
Nana Gyekye also appealed to the Members to forget about their political affiliations and work hard to see Kwabre District rise to the status it deserves.
The District Budget Analyst, Mr. Henry Minnow took several hours to explain the budget for the 2009 fiscal year.
