KWABRE: Kwabre hosts World Environment Day

A tree planting exercise to commemorate the World Environment Day has been held in Gyaman Pensan Senior High Technical School in Aboaso, in the Kwabre East District.
The exercise which falls on June 5 every year is used to stimulate world wide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Your plant needs you - Unite to combat climate change”.
District Environmental Officer, Mr. Baah Achamfuor appealed to the students to be mindful of the environment and the need to preserve it.
He said mankind gets so many benefits from the environment and it behooves on him as beneficiary to preserve it.
He said man’s nefarious activities often result in environmental degradational and it was necessary to desist from such practice.
For his part, the District Agricultural Officer, Mr. S. K. Semakor also appealed to the students as environmental anmbassadors to educate their peers, parents and people in their communities to desist from primitive farming activities which turn to degrade our environment.
The Deputy District Coordinating Director for the District, Mrs. Vida Achiaa Yeboah, also reiterated the need for man not to overlook the responsibility of taking care of plants, because of the enormous benefits we derive from it as individuals, community and the nation at large.
“You must take good care of your environment because all the benefits you are enjoying now are from the environment we find ourselves in” she cautioned.
She also appealed to the students to be studious and eschew vices which turn to take their concentration from their books.
The District Director for the National Disaster Management Organization, Mr. Peter R. Boateng said the selection of Gyaman Penssan Senior High Secondary and Technical School in Aboaso was necessitated as a result of the school being the hardest hit in a recent storm that hit the Aboaso community in the district.
Three additional seedlings of the Montarix tree were also presented to the school to be planted at vantage positions in the school.
He opined that the seedlings in future will help prevent other storms that will hit the community.
