Under the agreement, MOFA will provide policy support, coordination, and an enabling environment, while FarmMate will oversee implementation, production, and value chain operations.
As part of the initiative, FarmMate will collaborate with tomato farmers in the Offinso North District, one of the selected beneficiary districts, to cultivate 250 acres of tomatoes and other vegetables for processing and commercial supply.
Speaking at a meeting with farmers to introduce the programme, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Offinso North, Hon. Caesar Ofosu Acheampong, described the partnership as a major step towards strengthening Ghana’s tomato industry and ensuring market stability..jpg)
He noted that the initiative would help reduce the country's dependence on imported tomatoes, minimise post-harvest losses, and provide farmers with a guaranteed market for their produce.
“This intervention will address price fluctuations in the tomato market, reduce losses during periods of oversupply, and create employment opportunities along the agricultural value chain,” he said.
Hon. Acheampong explained that the programme would improve farmers’ incomes and encourage increased production by assuring them of ready buyers for their harvests. He added that the initiative would also ensure a consistent supply of quality tomatoes for traders, processors, and consumers.
The Manager of the Akumadan Irrigation Dam, Mr. Ebenezer Adu, said the project is expected to create a more predictable and sustainable market environment for both farmers and traders.
He called on stakeholders, including farmers, processors, financial institutions, and development partners, to support the initiative and contribute to its successful implementation and expansion.
A total of 200 farmers across the district are expected to benefit directly from the programme.
