DCE impressed with 2021/2022 BECE performance

The Berekum West District Assembly had its first Ordinary Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Second Assembly on Thursday, 11th May, 2023 at the Assembly’s Hall in Jinijini.

The District Chief Executive, Dominic Oppong in his sessional address to the House revealed that, his outfit is impressed with the improvement of education in the said the performances of the Pupils who sat for the 2021/2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the district is evidence of the commitment and hard work the District Assembly had made through the Education Directorate.

He applauded the Education Director, Mr. David Owusu Ansah, the staff of the Directorate and the entire Teachers and Pupils of the forty-one (41) Basic Schools in Berekum West District while calling for support from the Administrator of Common Funds to help the Directorate with a befitting office.

“Presiding Member, statistics from the Educational Directorate of the District reveals that, 958 candidates sat for the 2021/2022 BECE examination constituting 473 boys and 485 girls as against a total of 874 candidates for the 2020/2021 academic year made of 487 boys and 387 girls. Performance of our candidates for the BECE examination continues to be impressive, recording an average of 90% pass in the four core subjects.

One major challenge of the Directorate is the inadequate office space and to address this, the Assembly has written to the Administrator of the Common Fund to assist in the construction of a modern Office Complex not only for the Education Services but also for the Health Service and the Agric Directorate respectively hoping to receive a favorable response”. – He said.

On Infrastructural delivery, the District Chief Executive also revealed that the Assembly has built and commissioned some basic school classroom blocks which were started some years ago and promised to be built more soon.

“Since my assumption of office as the DCE in October 2021, I pledged to this House and to the people of the District that my administration was going to focus on the immediate completion of all old and on–going projects District wide to ensure value for money and for the people to benefit from these projects.

I am happy to announce to the Honourable House that except for the Construction of the DCD’s Bungalow and the Construction of the Nanasuano Police Station which are 80% and 20% completed respectively, all the old projects have been completed successfully and most of them are in use.

The completion of these old projects now gives way for the Assembly to roll out new infrastructure projects in the Educational, Health and other Social sectors of the District going forward”.

The meeting successfully ended with Assembly Members arguing to reject the recommendation made by the Public Relations and Complaints Committee to suspend the Assembly Member for Fetentaa Electoral Area from the Justice and Security Sub-Committee because of an action he exhibited towards some staff of the Works department.

The PRCC believes that his actions were contrary to his duties as a member of that sub-committee, but the Assembly Members pleaded that the Member should be made to write an apology letter to the affected staff as a caution since it is his first offence.

In attendance were Assembly Members present, the District Chief Executive, the District Coordinating Director, all Heads of Departments, Members of the Berekum Traditional Council, and some Invited Guests chaired by the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Nana Anthony Addai.
