This brought together Girls Prefects and their Assistants from all Junior High Schools, Senior High Schools and Tertiary Institutions within the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern region.

The initiative was taken to catch the young leaders with coaching, mentoring and provision of leadership skills to compete with their male counterparts in the near future.

The girls settled on their own slogan at the close of the program dabbed: “Empower yourself and work towards your goals”.

Speaking at the function, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mariam Iddrisu who’s also National Association of Local Authorities Ghana (NALAG) Women Caucus Representative stated that “I am passionate about women empowerment, and in demonstrating that, I have offered vocational skills training to a number of women in some communities in the assembly to economically empower them. This, I believe will trigger them to show interest in leadership positions in the country. Going forward I realized the program should be addressed from a young age hence this workshop for these female leaders in the schools in my area”

She also advised the girl child to take their education seriously and desist from engaging in activities that will lead to teenage pregnancies, school dropouts and contracting Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs) among others.

She added a student support programme introduced by the Assembly has so far catered for the Tertiary Education fees of 80 brilliant but needy students in the Municipality with more emphasis on the girl child.

The MCE called on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working in the area of girls and women empowerment to collaborate or support with the Assembly to meet the quarterly Girls Empowerment Program.
