The exercise books were in fulfilment of the pledge made by President John Evans Atta Mills to the basic schools during his campaign for the Presidency in 2008.

Mr Arthur said at the presentation at Apam that 42 million different exercise books had been provided by the government for basic schools in the country.

He said with the exercise books intervention and free supply of uniform to children in deprived areas, parents would have no excuse to refuse to send their children to school as already the Capitation Grant had taken care of fees and the School Feeding Programme was also to provide one free meal to the children.

He urged teachers to take advantage of government's gesture to improve quality of education.

Mr Arthur appealed to parents not to use government interventions as a licence to shirk their responsibilities towards education of their children.

Mr Fred P.K. Dunyoh, the District Director of Education, said the exercise books had come to address the problems of children going to school without writing materials which schools in the district were facing.

He commended the government and said the books would be used to raise standard of the children.

Nana Edu Effrim X, Chief of Apam, commended the government and said it should be made a regular feature and appealed to teachers and parents to ensure that children took good care of the books.
