According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Madam Felicia Edem Attipoe, it was through the efforts and support of Madam Naa Torshie Addo, that the Assembly secured funds to begin work on the “African Market” in Tema Community 2.
Speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, the MCE said the project became necessary after the old market was assessed and considered a death-trap by experts which needed an upgrade to help support economic activities in the area.
“It is a death trap”, she stated adding that, “the market is really a death trap now and I am just hoping no heavy rains will come because there could be disaster”, she bemoaned.
She further disclosed that, paper works for the project has gone through all due diligence with a report already submitted to the Regional Coordinating Council awaiting just the contractor to come to the site and commence work.
The project, she added, comes in phases, explaining that the first phase which comprises the construction of market sheds is expected to be completed by December this year while other phases will be completed later.
“What we are actually doing is that the project is in phases, the first phase is the market shed where our women will be selling and then offices and by December the contractor should finish the sheds”, she noted.
She bemoaned the current condition of the market, stressing that the Assembly was up to the task to ensure that work is completed on time to improve the plight of traders.
