North Tongu aims at building more Girls’ Model Schools

The North Tongu District Assembly is to build additional Girls’ Model Schools to expand the promotion of girl-child education in the district following the good performance by the first batch of students at the Aveyime Girls’ Model School at the BECE.

This is according to the District Chief Executive, Divine Osborn Fenu who commended the government for taking the initiative to establish such schools devoted to the education of girls.

He said, motivated by the good initiative, the Assembly renovated one of the abandoned structures, former the Aveyime RC JHS to establish what is now known as the Aveyime Girls’ Model School.

The DCE who commended the teachers for their dedication that resulted in the students giving a good account of themselves at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level said they look forward to expanding the model school in the district by establishing additional ones at other communities.

A place of immediate interest is Juapong. This, he indicated would be done immediately some funds are made available to the Assembly and disclosed that it would be budgeted for next year, even though they have the intention of seeking support from the Ministry of Education.

Mr. Fenu disclosed that a great percentage of the Assembly’s resources goes into educational support including scholarship supports to a number of students pursuing various courses at the tertiary level, support in preparing students for the BECE as well as the provision of desks, stating that this year some 500 metallic dual desks were supplied to schools.

Some additional educational infrastructure projects include a 6-unit classroom block at Dovome, with support from Pencils of Promise, an NGO; ongoing construction of a 3-unit kindergarten block at Battor DA Methodist Basic School with staff room, office, 4-number WC, and changing room , Unit completed at Battor DA Junior High School.

The DCE expressed delight that these supports are yielding results as they have witnessed improvements in the academic performance of the students.

He is also confident that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) would complete ongoing projects particularly at the senior high schools to help solve the infrastructure challenges in the schools. And more importantly called for the provision of teachers bungalows in such schools to help keep eye on the students.
