The Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the initiative was a result of the staff members not being paid as a result of the pandemic COVID-19 which has caused schools to be locked down.
He said they have transferred cash to 659 teaching and non-teaching staff, indicating that the figure comprises of some 570 teaching and non-teaching staff from 45 private schools and 89 volunteer teachers in the public basic schools who are not under the government payroll.
He stated that he was very sad to hear that unlike their counterparts in the public sector, teaching and non-teaching staff have not received salaries since March because of the pandemic COVID-19.
The MP’s initiative to improve the plight of private school teachers who have not received salaries since March due to the COVID-19 induced closure of schools has now been successfully implemented.
He expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all those whose generosity has helped them make this initiative a resounding success, adding that he is eternally indebted to his army of dedicated volunteers who authenticated the data and verified the mobile money transactions.
Mr. Ablakwa indicated that the source of funds for the intervention is MP’s Common Fund which financed 30%; his personal contribution also contributed 20%; MP’s fundraising efforts from donors accounted for the remaining 50%.
He concluded that “we are all in this together, we shall defeat COVID-19 together and like the Phoenix, we shall rise from the ashes together”.
