The committee, will among other things, serve as a platform for planning and implementation of road safety interventions at the district level; provide operational direction oversight and critical assessment of road safety initiatives and activities; and also to promote the mainstreaming of road safety into the Assembly’s work plans and budget.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Felix Owusu, a staff of the Authority underscored the importance of the committee adding that, having a representation of the Authority at the Assembly level was the best way to resolving some of the challenges associated with road safety, especially, in the urban communities.
He was optimistic that the Authority undertakes programmes and activities that resonates with the Authority’s mission of increasing general awareness for road safety and stabilize the relatively upward trend of road traffic crashes by reducing the fatality rate among others, through research, data-led campaigns and innovative measures.
He charged the committee to endeavor to meet frequently in order to help meet the expectation of the Authority.
He also urged the assembly to provide the committee with the needed assistance to help them carry out their mandate without facing challenges.
On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ashaiman, Albert Boakye Okyere described the committee as long overdue stressing that the role of the committee was required to addressing some of the road safety challenges in the area.
He said Ashaiman had taken a different dimension through the implementation of programme and policies and thus the introduction of the committee with help complement existing effort already in place to reduce road clashes.
Mr Okyere added that the committee is already empowered through statutory regulation to help it discharge its function without fear or favour.
He added: “We want to hear much from you, either through sanctions or through education.”
The committee encompassed personnel drawn from various institutions and organisations like the Ghana Police Service, National Road safety Authority, Ashaiman Assembly and some transport operators.
