The engagement took place at Ashaiman main market in the Blackpatsona Electoral Area and brought together market women, truck pushers, drivers, hawkers, and artisans among others.

Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who spoke to the media after the four-hour sensitization programme, also seized the opportunity to educate the public on matters of taxes, sanitation, land acquisition and developmental issues in Ashaiman.

He lauded the residents for the confidence reposed in the Assembly, adding that the assembly remains poised to ensure massive development in the area to help improve the standard of living.

Touching on the collection of taxes by the Assembly, Mr Albert Boakye Okyere bemoaned that there had been several reports of some individuals who collect monies from traders without issuing them required receipts.

He stressed that security officials have been notified of these criminal activities and was mapping up strategies to deal with the menace. He said the Assembly, in collaboration with the District Police Command and other security operatives, would continue to ensure that Ashaiman is safe for all.

“Ashaiman cannot be the den for criminals, we will chase them out of our jurisdiction”, MCE emphasized. He added that the Assembly was the only institution mandated by law to mobilize revenue from traders and business entities operating within the jurisdiction of the Assembly.

Mr Okyere advised traders and business operators to demand receipt from public officers anytime they pay for any services, saying that “such a move would aid in identifying and arresting non-commissioned individuals, who extort money from traders within the Municipality.”

He said the Assembly, apart from collecting revenue from the people, as part of its mandate, could help facilitate loans with financial institutions for traders and businesses to boost their operations. MCE said most markets in the Ashaiman enclave would receive some facelift to boost investors and ensure rapid development.

Mrs Patricia Ayaba, the Queen mother of Ashaiman Main Market, expressed gratitude to the Municipal Chief Executive for engaging them as traders are suffering from the hands of these hardened criminals.
