The event, which took place at the Beulah Hotel was on the theme: “Creating a Resilient Municipality: The Role of Leadership.”

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is marked annually to sensitize the citizens on the prevention, response and resilience to natural hazards, and emergencies in the area.

The day is also marked as efforts continue in the buildup for a resilient population in disaster management and reduction.

Speaking at the symposium, the Ashaiman Municipal NADMO coordinator, Mr Daniel Acquah, revealed that, “the Day was set by the United Nations General Assembly to create awareness, and also bring disaster issues to doorsteps of the people while also recognizing the need to develop a culture of disaster risk reduction among countries.”

According to him, the event has for the past 25 years been used as a platform to stimulate and create awareness on disaster reduction and opportunities to recognize progress, and also help build a resilient economy.

This year's celebration, he added, focused on increasing the availability and access to early warning systems, disaster risk reduction and also ensuring assessment to people by 2030.

He therefore charged authorities to put in various mechanisms and work assiduously to help raise awareness of citizens at all levels of benefit by reducing the urban risk.

"Our assembly members, unit committee members in the community, we are expecting that they will keep on preaching and educating the people regularly on how to eradicate disaster from the municipality" he added.

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Mr Albert Boakye Okyere lauded the Assembly for putting place measures to curb disaster in Ashaiman and its surrounding communities.

He again lauded the organizers for their vision and also stressed the need for the Assembly to prepare well so that it would not be taken unaware of any form of disaster.
