She underlined the need for Ghanaians to reject any attempt by self-seeking individuals to sow seeds of discord among the citizenry.

The MCE was addressing a parade of school children and security agencies to mark Ghana's 62nd independence anniversary celebration at Konongo-Odumase.

Hundreds of students drawn from various schools in the Municipality took part in the colourful ceremony which was attended by the general public.

Mrs. Akomeah said as a nation we owed our forefathers who fought for independence a duty to keep the unity and cohesion of the country.

She said as heirs of a generation that exhibited high sense of selflessness and patriotism, it was our duty not to allow parochial interests to override national development.

She stressed the need for us to collectively work hard irrespective of our political inclination to bequeath a vibrant, prosperous and developed country to posterity.

"Destiny brought us together as one nation. Our ethnic and cultural diversity is a source of strength and not a weakness", she counselled.

Touching on education, she said government would continue to invest in the sector to ensure access and quality at all levels.

She mentioned a number of classroom blocks under construction with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and the District Development Fund (DDF).

These, she noted, formed part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the Municipality and charged all stakeholders to play their respective roles effectively to raise the standard of education in the area.
