Agona West Assembly embarks on exercise to reduce open defecation

The Agona West Municipal Assembly has embarked on an aggressive sensitization drive in the Municipality to construct over 2,000 households latrines in the Municipality to reduce the problem of open defecation.

The Assembly is collaborating with UNICEF and Community Water and Sanitation Agency for the construction of the household latrines in all towns and villages.

Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, Municipal Chief Executive for Agona West made this known at separate sensitization programmes to educate the residents at Ahamadonko.

The MCE was accompanied by Mr. George Freeman, Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Chief, Mr. Emmanuel Ampong, Deputy Municipal Environmental and Sanitation Health Officer as well as officials of the Assembly.

Other communities visited included Adwendaho, Adwenambantem, Beposo and Gyarmanfom.

The MCE reminded the communities that it was an offence to defecate in the open and appealed to Chiefs, Assembly members, unit Committees, and opinion leaders to support the exercise to succeed.

She said the exercise had been intensified and was hopeful that the Municipality would soon be declared Open Defecation Free to avoid cholera and other communicable diseases that affected productivity.

Mrs. Assan said insanitary conditions with its attendant diseases including cholera cost Ghana millions of Cedis and that the monies could be channeled into development projects to raise the standards

of loving of Ghanaians.

He said sanitation was a shared responsibility and asked residents to ensure sound environmental practices to avoid outbreak of diseases.
