The project, which is to be financed through the Common Fund, is expected to provide a modern sporting facility for students, young people and other football enthusiasts in the municipality.
The new initiative comes after an earlier astroturf project announced in 2024 stalled due to a lack of funds, leaving the intended development incomplete. The latest sod-cutting ceremony therefore marks a renewed commitment to addressing the need for a suitable football facility in the area.
When completed, the pitch is expected to provide a better environment for football training, school sporting activities and community competitions. It could also offer young people an opportunity to develop their sporting abilities and participate in organised recreational activities.
The location at Suhum Anglican School is expected to make the facility useful to students and the wider community, providing a space for physical education, talent development and other sporting programmes.
Investment in sports infrastructure can contribute to youth development by giving young people access to safe and appropriate places to exercise, train and compete. It can also help schools strengthen their sporting programmes and encourage greater participation in physical activities.
The use of the Common Fund to finance the project highlights the role of public development funding in supporting infrastructure at the municipal level.
The successful completion of the facility will be important in ensuring that the municipality receives the intended benefits, particularly after the difficulties that affected the previous project.
The new astroturf pitch is expected to contribute to the development of sports in Suhum and provide a valuable recreational facility for students and residents
